We had a dog, but for many reasons we had to re-home him when he was young.  You were all devastated and Mommy and I were so sad for you, but we didn’t have much of a choice based on the circumstances.  I spent the entire 5 months taking care of him (the dog) most of the time.  It was difficult and tiring but also enjoyable in some ways.  It was nice to see the joy the dog brought you, but there were times that you were frustrated with the dog or not interested in him too.
