We had a dog, but for many reasons we had to re-home him when he was young. You were all devastated and Mommy and I were so sad for you, but we didn’t have much of a choice based on the circumstances. I spent the entire 5 months taking care of him (the dog) most of the time. It was difficult and tiring but also enjoyable in some ways. It was nice to see the joy the dog brought you, but there were times that you were frustrated with the dog or not interested in him too.
Over that period of time in reading about dogs, meeting other dogs, and owning a dog, I realized that dogs need three things to have an awesome life:
- A home with a family that can give them attention and love.
- A place to run every day, off leash.
- Another dog companion, ideally in the same household.
You may get a dog when you are older. If you do, try to give the dog at least two of these three things, if not all three. The quality of their life (and yours) depends on it.
Here are some other recommendations that I can offer should you decide to get a dog, based on our experience (and my experience having a dog as a child myself):
- Look for a dog that will get no bigger than 20 lbs, as they will be much easier to manage and walk, for you and small kids if you have them.
- Make sure everyone in your household gets tested for dog allergies PRIOR to getting a dog.
- Foster a dog for at least 30 days prior to getting one (DEFINITELY DO THIS).
- Plan financially for the dog. You’ll need someone to walk the dog or watch him or her when you go away if you are not home often.
- Make sure everyone in your house is 100% bought into the idea of getting a dog. If anyone is not, problems and stress will arise and won’t go away, ever. Be sensitive to the fact that not all people are dog people (it’s okay).
- Know that a dog will require your time and attention, and maybe a lot of it.
- Get pet insurance. Yes veterinary bills may add up.
There are many benefits to having a dog or other animals in your life, you just have to be prepared for what comes along with them.
Ruff-ruff.
Love,
Dad
