We recently signed one of you up for a winter track program. It is one hour each evening, two days per week. Two of your friends also attend, as well as several other children. The program costs $100 per month.
You’ve asked me several times, “Dad why are you paying $100 per month to have someone watch me run around the track?” Good question. Here are some answers:
- You would never do it on your own,
- Physical exercise daily is really important,
- Interacting with other kids your age is really important,
- Holding yourself accountable in life is fundamental (more on that below),
- You do really well in structured situations, where you do the same things over and over on a certain day.
Accountability is an important concept in life. The definition of accountability is: required or expected to justify actions or decisions; responsible. Essentially, it’s a way to make sure you do something without relying on yourself. For example, if a kid tells his or her parents that she will run every day for 30 minutes, it is very unlikely she will actually do it. If a kid is signed up for track for 30-minutes every day, she will definitely run, because her track coach will hold her accountable to do so.
You should always look to build structure and accountability into your life, especially when it comes to important things like diet, physical and mental health, reading, eating vegetables, and so on.
Love,
Dad
